Blogging Challenge: Day 7 – Music

“What are your five favorite songs?”

Okay, so let’s start with a guilty pleasure. Gangnam Style by PSY:

I can’t help it! It’s just catchy and bouncy. I think the fact I don’t understand the lyrics, though I’ve looked them up so I know what the song is saying, helps to keep it from being annoying.

__________

Waiting for the Night Boat by Duran Duran:

Director Russell Mulcahy was behind many of Duran Duran’s early videos, including this one. I know this is my five favorite songs, but growing up during the dawn of M-tv inexorably linked the music to the music video for most of us. They went hand in hand. The videos began branching out from being just fancy performance clips to five-minute movies, like Night Boat. They evoked even more imagination – and even more fangurl squeals across the globe! This was one of my favorite songs and videos, and actually inspired me to do some research and find out where the lines Simon is murmuring came from. Guess what – it was Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:

She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes in a shape no bigger than an agate stone on the forefinger of an alderman. Drawn by her team of little Atomies, athwart men’s noses as they lie asleep.

It took me a week of research, but when I finally told my fellow little group of Duranies, two of them decided they “needed” to read the play, because Simon had quoted it. Yes, a video got us to read Shakespeare.

Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds

This song is timeless, thanks in part to The Breakfast Club. It’s just one of those that I turn up on the radio when I hear it. I just don’t know what else to say about it, because It’s a song you either feel or you don’t.

__________

All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor:

It’s fun! It’s boppy! It’s swingy! (And PC-wise it gives a good body-positive message. But who said I was PC?) I really like this song, and the video is too cute – gotta love the guy dancing, too!

Mama’s Broken Heart by Miranda Lambert

Love, love, love this one. It’s fun and SO true. Thankfully, my Mom would never have told me that stuff – but then I would never have been caught outside a fire with the matches in my hand, either. I kept my crazy concealed… I just moped a lot. And the video is great, too!

__________

While I can’t really say these are my very favorite songs in the world, because you know that winds up changing all the time, these are the ones that are pretty much up there right now. I hope you had fun watching and listening!

Author:

Syd is a Midwestern girl who doesn’t think the term “girl” is sexist in the least – especially after she left her 20s. She holds a huge love for history (from WWI through the end of WWII, Victorian, Regency, and Elizabethan eras), some science fiction, and likes to pass the time reading, working with photography and needlework, and writing things. Lots of things. Syd likes to dance, too, but she looks like an utter goob doing so!

    1. I’m so glad you found mine and followed, too! I love your blog, and actually was just reading more of it while sipping my morning coffee. Your writing style is as fun to read as watching Gangnam Style. 😛 (Seriously!)
