Lust and Envy, two of those Seven Deadly Sins! They seem to strike me (a lot) when I am browsing beauty stuff on the Internet. I’m sure I’m not the only one…
For this week’s #beautiesonfire collab, I figured why not share some of those things I’ve been lusting after? So I went on a little virtual window-shopping trip to Neiman-Marcus. I wanted so so much! The list was whittled down to seven items, finally – though I still want the rest.
I wandered over to Sephora yesterday afternoon to pick up some more cologne for Hims, and “happened” to glance at the nail polish. (Because, ya know, I never look at the polish…. oh, no…) Wait a minute, I say, What’s this? A bunch of them are on sale for five dollars???
Yeps, it’s true: Just that morning they’d been told to mark down a bunch of the fantastical Formula X polishes. My very favorite, Hubba Hubble, was already gone, as were quite a few of the others. (One of the girls working there told me that when they saw the markdown, some of them grabbed the ones they love and purchased them right away. Not that I can blame them!) Apparently the company is introducing a new formula, but no one knows what colors and styles might make a return, and what’s gone for good.
So, before they are all gone, go to your local Sephora and nab a few, or grab some here: Sephora Nails Sales! Oooh, and I have just learned the amazingness that is Ebates, too – and you will get 8% cash back in a check for whatever you spend at Sephora. Talk about a savings! And yeah… if you sign up using the links I just put here, I’ll get a bit of a bonus. So please, please, please use these links? *laffs!* Thank you!
Oh, wow – the Fourth of July weekend is already done! Hims and I stayed close to home. Partially because we lack the funds to go jet-setting around the country, but also because please… we do not want to have to deal with a noisy & packed hotel, noisy & packed restaurants, and congested highways.
My favorite lip product:
Besame’s newest shade: Victory Red. I’ve never tried their cosmetics before, so was taking a bit of a gamble with this one – and I absolutely am obsessed! More to come in a separate post!
My favorite nail polish:
Asgard by CrowsToes Nail Color! I bought this off the Llarowe site about a year ago, and am so happy to see that both Asgard and Midgard (amazing holographic polishes!) are still being made by CrowsToes.
My favorite scent:
Tocca – Cleopatra. As the Sephora website says: Inspired by the Mediterranean seductress, Cleopatra captivates the senses. It is infused with the crisp, fresh scent of juicy grapefruit and soothing cucumber used in the legendary queen’s beauty rituals. It’s perfect for hot summer days and sultry summer nights. I really love the whole Tocca line, and wouldn’t have discovered it except Sephora sent me a sample of Margeaux (I think it was) a couple years ago. I loved it so much I wanted to try out the rest! I have seven of their perfumes currently. (I believe – I’m too lazy to go count them right now!)
My favorite app on my phone:
FotoRus for Android. This is one of those photo editors – one of a bazillion out there for free. (Free, as you can see by the big ol’ advertisement up top!) You can do a photo collage, stickers, pro edit (pretty much accessing everything else), beauty filters, and PIP – like I did with the flowers below. The ads are annoying, of course, and they are always trying to get you to download other photo apps for free, but it’s fun to play with.
My favorite munchie:
Honeycrisp apples! I never heard of these before moving to Ohio, and now I can’t get enough of them. So so juicy and sweet, with a wonderful crisp texture. I love them so much Hims will pay $3.99 a pound for them in the off season! (I have me a pretty good guy, huh?)
Favorite thing to watch on television:
Last year, Hims and I stumbled across Dark Matter on SyFy On Demand. Just idly curious, we clicked on it to check it out. And then we saw the names behind the show: Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie – both from the Stargate series. (Mallozzi was all three, while Mullie was Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis.) As Neogaf sums up: Dark Matter follows six passengers aboard a spaceship who wake up from cryo-sleep with no memory of who they are or how they got there. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a preset destination: a remote mining colony that’s about to become a war zone. Their investigation into their situation triggers a series of interactions that provide clues to their individual identities … and as to why they’ve been brought together to fulfill an elusive and ever-daunting mission.
This series, based on a comic book, seemed to start out slow for us. As the show progressed, it got better. The characters all use the order number in which they woke as their names: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, and Six, and Android, who is an android with control over the ship. Two is the leader, and while she finally began to grow on us, her character in the first few episodes nearly made us stop watching: she just was coming off as the hard-ass tough female leader who can do anything better than any man out there, and everyone had better agree. Yuck. (Give me Samantha Carter any day.)
What kept me coming back, other than playing Where’s Waldo with former Stargate people (Rodney McKay, I’m so lookin’ at you!), were the characters Five, a young teen girl who seems psychic at first and who is a whiz with anything mechanical, and Six, a quiet but very strong man who grows to be somewhat of a protector of Five. I was sad when it disappeared off the On Demand list, and since neither of us heard anything else about the show, we assumed it had been cancelled after one season. Not so fast! Hims was browsing Syfy yesterday afternoon to see if they were showing any of the old-old Ghost Hunters episodes since the season premiere is coming up soon, and there is was: Dark Matter. “Hey, isn’t that the show we were watching?” he asked. And when he clicked on it – Season 2 Episode 1! Happy, happy!
My favorite thing at Trader Joe’s:
Never never never would I have thought in a million years that I would be loving on some parsnip chips. But I am! They are crispy, sweet with a bit of a carroty flavor to them, and just too good to put down.
What else should I add to my monthly favorites list? Anyone have any suggestions?
Target seems to have settled into a box-per-month rhythm. I’m certainly not complaining! If you go to their site and search “beauty box” near the end of the month, you can usually see sneak previews of what’s going to be in the upcoming box. They have been released at the beginning of the month recently, so keep an eye out, and snag one early – they do sell out fast!
I know this is a bit late on this month’s box, but it just builds up more excitement for June’s box, right? *laffs*
First, the insert card that tells you about what you will find in the box. It also has a coupon for $3.00 off any beauty purchase of $15.00 or more – which makes the cost of this box more like $4.00 instead of the $7.00 I spent on ordering it. When I began reading about these products and the people who make them, I knew I wanted to try them. All natural and organic ingredients, the company is owned by women and managed by women, those are total pluses.
First off, what the brand itself says about this product:
Valentia Skin Detoxifying Clay Mask – Natural and Organic Ingredients – With Kaolin Clay, Hisbiscus & Cranberry Fibers
Specially selected ingredients work together to achieve optimum results.
– Kaolin Clay:Clay minerals draw impurities, improve skin tone, and tighten pores for smoother firmer skin.
– Plant Stem Cells:Naturally decreases the level of pro-aging toxins and works to soother the skin, reduce redness, and improve evenness.
– Spirulina:A botanical stimulant full of vitamins that hydrates the skins surface and contributes to tissue regeneration of the skin.
– CoQ10:Lessens the appearance of wrinkles by reducing free radical damage and stimulating health collagen production.
– Hibiscus & Cranberry Fibers:Both lend their anti-aging properties to firm and reinforce the skin, helping to reduce the creation of new wrinkles.
Now, how did I like it?
I absolutely love masks, and I’ve been looking for a really good clay mask (that won’t break the bank) for ages. The first thing I noticed about this was the scent… sort of like always! It’s sweet and citrusy, and I think smells a bit like flowers. Not something you would expect from a clay mask, right? But it’s great!
As for the application, the mask is a bit on the watery side in the jar, so you have to be careful with that unless you want it all over your bathroom floor. I like the consistency because it makes it easier to apply gently and doesn’t tug at my skin the way more solid clay masks tend to do. Plus it takes a bit longer to dry, but then seems to dry pretty evenly. No cracking on the outer edges while the cheeks are still wet!
While it’s on my face, it feels cool and a little bit tingly, but not in a painful or irritating way. It might bother people with sensitive skin, but I have no problems. When I remove it, I wet my washcloth with warm water and begin massaging the clay in light circles. They tell you to do that because of the gentle exfoliating properties of the hibiscus and cranberry flower fibers. It washes off pretty easily, and my skin feels just amazing afterward! Very soft and smooth, without being over-tight or dry.
Sephora PLAY! is now available all over the United States! About time, huh? All the items come in this nice box, great for storage, and placed prettily inside. It also has a booklet with it, and the “title” of this month’s box is: The It Crowd. The booklet is pretty cool, going through each of the items in the box, now giving either tips or how-to steps. In the back there are five more tips for the items, how to match them up with each other, and the Play!Pass. The Pass entitles us to one-on-one advice from someone at Sephora (which I think just comes with walking in the door, really), and if you scan the Pass when you are shopping, you are awarded a bonus 50 Beauty Insider points.
Hims and I had an out of state friend visiting for a long weekend this past weekend. Since she’s never been to Ohio, we wanted to show her around a bit. Of course, I wanted to show her the Sephora here (along with Torrid and one of the best places for Turkish cuisine!). There were two specific eyeshadow palettes I was looking for while we were there. They were out of one, but on the back side of a display I found the Urban Decay palette – only two left! Good for me, as it’s a limited edition and I didn’t want to miss out.
And I love the box it comes in, too!
The lid for the palette is a great matte black with a translucent gem-cut UD on the top. There is also a full mirror on the underside, so you can stand it up and use it that way.
The sides of the lid have this beautiful filigree pattern!
