My March Favorites!

I haven’t really done this yet, but I keep seeing monthly favorite posts everywhere! So why not try it myself? I can’t promise I’ll remember to do this for April, much less August, but at least we’ll have March!

My favorite lip product:

74681-0

Bare Minerals Pop of Passion in Plumberry Pop – from one of my Sephora Play! boxes! I think I was a little meh about it at the very beginning, but I have become a fan. It’s always in my purse so I can just glide it on my lips whenever. It can give a little color or a lot, depending on how much you use. And it is soooo moisturizing! LoveloveLOVE it!

My favorite nail polish:

OPI_NOLA_Swatch-

I love the New Orleans Collection from O⋅P⋅I, and all of them are super, but I have really fallen for Take a Right on Bourbon! It’s a white-silver metallic with a pearly finish, and it just looks lovely. Two coats gives it good opacity and it lasts a nice long while.

My favorite book (that was read this month):

210693

The Tutor’s Daughter by Julie Klassen. If I’m not mistaken, I have now read all of Klassen’s books to date. Oh noes! I do love historicals, and though I’m not too much of a romance reader, you can suck me in totally with a well-written Regency romance. Julie Klassen writes those! The blurb about the book:

Emma Smallwood, determined to help her widowed father when his boarding school fails, accompanies him to the cliff-top manor of a baronet and his four sons. But soon after they arrive and begin teaching the two younger boys, mysterious things begin to happen. Who does Emma hear playing the pianoforte at night, only to find the music room empty? And who begins sneaking into her bedchamber, leaving behind strange mementoes?

The baronet’s older sons, Phillip and Henry Weston, wrestle with problems—and secrets—of their own. They both remember the studious Miss Smallwood from their days at her father’s academy. But now one of them finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her….

When suspicious acts escalate, can Emma figure out which brother to blame, and which to trust with her heart?

Filled with page-turning suspense, The Tutor’s Daughter takes readers to the windswept Cornwall coast—a place infamous for shipwrecks and superstitions—where danger lurks, faith is tested, and romance awaits.

My favorite scent:

14004528002_2_1

Aerin – Waterlily Sun. I must have received this as a sample when I ordered something from Sephora, because there’s no other place it would have come from. From the first whiff of this fragrance I fell in love with it. It’s expensive, though! I’m not sure I’d hand over $110.00 for 1.7 ounces anytime soon. Maybe as a giftie to myself when I lose like 50 pounds or something? Yeah – that sounds good! But really – go sniff this for yourself at Sephora or Nordstrom’s. It’s delicious!

My favorite app on my phone:

2_can_you_escape

Can You Escape for Android. The game is described like this: “The purpose of this game is to break out of the rooms. Solve the puzzles and find all the hidden objects that you have to use in the rooms in order to advance to the next floor. Challenge yourself in this fun, addictive, free and popular puzzle game.” It is fun, and it is addicting, and I’ve still just got the first one! You have to look under and inside things, move panels and objects, use things you pick up to affect other things, and remember codes and sequences – and figure out what they are to be used for. It’s fun!

My favorite drink:

Months ago, Hims and I began going to Barnes & Noble every couple weeks or so, browsing and then sitting down in the cafe to sip on a Starbuck’s. Yeah, like a cheap date. I’m easy like that. *laughs* Anyway, I asked if their chai tea latte could be made no fat and no sugar, because there’s a coffee house we go to nearby that has it that way. “Oh, yes,” the barista tells me. “Our chai latte is sugar free and can have fat free milk.” Super! So this is what I order. For weeks. The whole time I am putting in the PointsPlus for the other coffee house’s drink. When Weight Watchers totally got onto SmartPoints, I tried to find the fat-free, sugar-free iced chai latte in the data base. Nothing. I tried on the Starbuck’s site, and nothing. I found lot-o-sugar chai tea latte, but not sugar-free. So finally one night we are there, and I ask a young man behind the counter about it: “I was told they are sugar-free, but I don’t see that on the website.” Guess what? That barista who told me this was completely wrong. Like 62 grams of sugar wrong. I about died – no wonder I was having such a hard time losing any more weight! Then I got a bit angrier, because what if I’d been a diabetic? I’m asking for no sugar for a reason.

Anyway, this guy stepped up and kicked some ass. After asking me if he could try something (and if I didn’t like it, I didn’t have to pay for it), he pulled out a Venti size hot cup, put 5 pumps of sugar-free vanilla syrup in it, two teabags of rooibos tea (the African Autumn tea they have), filled it with water to just cover the teabags, and then added steamed non-fat milk. It’s a steamer with syrup, and it was just amazingly delicious. He called it African Sunset. I’ve had it a few times since – sometimes the baristas can make it almost perfectly, and other times they really screw it up. But it’s definitely my go-to drink at Starbuck’s now!

Favorite thing to watch on television:

sg1-series-header

You betcha – Stargate SG1 – all the seasons on DVD. We also have the movies that came after it, Stargate: Atlantis, and the original movie (with James Spader- ultra-yum!). Now, for the mega-dork admission – we play Where’s Waldo with cast members of the Stargates and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. You’re always seeing them pop up in the SG episodes, and it’s fun just to point and call out: “There’s Gaeta!” or “That’s Chief Tyrell!” Because yeah – they are in some episodes along with others. Then there’s the Where’s Waldo game with Peter DeLuise: nearly every time he directed an episode of Stargate SG1, he is IN the episode somewhere. Sometimes he’s easy to spot, and other times you might catch a quick glimpse, which prompts us to rewind a bit and see if that really was him.

Yeah, so we’re a bit weird. 🙂

My favorite thing at Trader Joe’s:

inner-peas

Trader Joe’s Contemplates Inner Peas! It took me a long, long time to finally get around to trying these things out. I mean, how good could baked green pea pods be? But of course, this is Trader Joe’s we are talking about. Silly me for waiting so long. They are good – there’s not a whole lot of taste to them, but they aren’t bland. They are a bit greasy, though, so that might be a drawback for some people. Still, I love the things!

What else should I add to my monthly favorites list? Anyone have any suggestions?

BOOO IPSY

I just got the sneak peek at my next Ipsy glam bag.

Yuck.

Just…. yuck.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in an ugly color. NOT Illamasqua. Something I can go buy at freakin’ Rite Aid or WalMart and wouldn’t. And the other stuff isn’t thrilling me on the website, either.

But one good thing I see… I scroll down to the yummy eyeliner the lucky b’s get (grrr) and click on Illamasqua, then go to their site:

We ship to The United States

Welcome!

We are happy to let you know that we now ship our products to The United States.

Standard delivery now costs $7.50 and is free when you spend over $75.00!
Woohoo!!! Thank goodness. That I can go for. I absolutely adore their nail polishes, though it seems the collection has been pared down a bit. *sobs*
One thing I noticed awhile back when I was perusing their website was that they seem to have no qualms in using everyone as a model. I mean, most are going to be very young, Photoshopped near-flawless women, but they also have these women as models:
Illamasqua
How cool is that? Because you don’t stop playing with makeup when you hit 35.
Illamasqua-Website-2015_Shop-Category-Banner-best-Sellers-V3_1
And look! They didn’t airbrush out the creases and lines! They let her retain her character, which simply kicks ass in my opinion.
So yeah – I’m really disappointed I didn’t get the Illamasqua item this month. Maybe I’m a bit mollified, though, in learning I can get their items again. Maybe a little… 🙂

Target Beauty Box Sneak Peek!

Woot! If you go on over to the Target website and search for “beauty box” (or you can follow this link here, too) you can see what Target is planning on putting in their next beauty box. Of course, it won’t be all of that – I’d guess everyone gets one random sample of the nugg face mask, for starters. But look what’s on the page:

  • Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
  • Hair Food Apricot shampoo and conditioner
  • nugg face masks
  • Caress Fine Fragrance Adore Forever shower gel
  • Banana Boat Sun Comfort
  • Sinful Colors Professional Nail Color (another one where we’ll get a random type)
  • you are AMAZING Juicy Grapefruit body lotion
  • Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt spray

This one looks like it’s going to be goooood! I’d better not pull a goofball and miss it again this time. Gah. Seriously, I am really wanting to try the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. I haven’t yet tried a sleeping mask, so this will be a great way to do so and not buy something I’d later let dry up in the pot.

Laneige

Everyone have a super great Saturday!

Brrr!

Hello, everyone!

It is 6° outside. There are huge icicles the length of my windows stretching towards the ground. The cats have taken to hibernating in the closets (Alanis in the bedroom, unless she’s right next to my feet – and the heat register, and Dexter either on top of my computer tower or tucked away inside the linen closet, nested in the fluffy towels).

The heater has been on consistently since last week, which means dry skin. Yuck. For some reason, my left elbow, of all things, has really become dry. It’s even felt like it’s cracked. No good! So even as I wasn’t so thrilled with receiving the small trial version of Aveeno lotion in one of my latest Ipsy bags, I’ve been using it during the day on my poor elbow. At night, I’ve been using Nivea Soft and Tallowderm. What an improvement!

My lips have been drying out, too. So far I’ve kept them from getting chapped by using my good ole standby: Burt’s Bees. I lovelovelove Burt’s Bees! My favorites have got to be the honey lip balm and the ultra-conditioning lip balm with kokum butter. Okay, not that I really know what kokum butter is, but it sure works!

I’ll admit, I’ve been lax the past couple weeks with my skincare regimen. No reasons why, really, other than winter just always gets me a bit down. I’ve begun really getting back into it, and am soooo grateful for the TonyMoly sheet masks! (And grateful to Elizabeth at Everything & Nothin’ for posting about the Amazon deal!) In fact, after I finish writing this post, I’m going to moosh one on my face for half an hour. Mmm, that sounds so good.

For munchies, I’ve been all about the Honeycrisp apples and the Cuties clementines. Seriously, I’ve been chomping on one apple and four clementines while Hims and I watch DVDs at night before bed. It satisfies my tv-watching cravings as well as my sweet-tooth. I’ve also been in love with Wasa Crisp’n Light 7 Grain crackerbreads. I already liked the “thicker” ones, but these are just perfect! I put some shredded cheese on two of them, then top them off with two thin slices of Trader Joe’s Natural Turkey Summer Sausage. Yum! Nice, light, and light on the SmartPoints, and fills me up.

At least the sun is out today, even though we’re expecting three to five inches of snow on Monday. Again. Yuck. I know I’m not the only one waiting for springtime!

Oh, yeah – I collect piggy banks. 🙂

Sephora PLAY! – Box #5 (January)

Sephora PLAY! is currently only out in Houston and Dallas, TX, Boston, MA, and the Cincinnati/Columbus area of Ohio. There might be a couple more areas now, but I’m not sure. All the items come in this nice box, great for storage, and placed prettily inside. It also has a booklet with it, and the “title” of this month’s box is: No Appointment Necessary, which for some reason makes me think of Anthony Bourdain (“No Reservations”). The booklet is pretty cool, going through each of the items in the box, now giving either tips or how-to steps. In the back there are five more tips for the items, how to match them up with each other, and the Play!Pass. The Pass entitles us to one-on-one advice from someone at Sephora (which I think just comes with walking in the door, really), and if you scan the Pass when you are shopping, you are awarded a bonus 50 Beauty Insider points.

Sephora PLAY! – Box #2 (October)

My second Sephora PLAY! subscription box came while we were in Oklahoma, so it took a few more days to get it from the post office.

Sephora PLAY! is currently only out in Houston and Dallas, TX, Boston, MA, and the Cincinnati/Columbus area of Ohio. All the items come in this nice box, great for storage, and placed prettily inside. It also has a booklet with it, and the “title” of this month’s box is: Secrets to Dewy Skin. The booklet is pretty cool, going through each of the items in the box, giving you a Did You Know?, a Fun Fact, a How To Tip, and a Play! Hack. In the back there are six more hacks for the items, and the Play!Pass. K-Beauty: My First Venture (With A Sephora Haul!)

Hi, everyone!

You might remember that a few weeks ago I tried my first sheet mask from a little Korean grocery/household shop nearby. No, I didn’t write about it back then, because I wanted to save it for when I had more to write about. With my little Sephora haul over the weekend, I now have stuff to write.

First off, the masks. They are made by a company called Dermal (which makes me think of the layers of the skin… I guess that’s what it’s supposed to do!), and come in a lot of different types, unlike what you see on their site for some reason. I knew I wanted to try the snail formula, just to see if it would make me shudder even putting that on my face. I also found one that said it’s “firming · mild · healthy”, so I grabbed two of that, also. It wasn’t until I got home and really looked at them that I saw the other one was called “Syn-ake”, and is made with a synthesized form of snake venom. I’ll be honest – I haven’t had the nerve to try that one yet, though I’ve read reviews online and haven’t found anyone suffering a bad reaction to it. I know it’s supposed to be like a natural-type Botox, but I never wanted to do Botox, either!

The Sephora Epic Rewards Fail – Their Fix

For some reason yesterday, I got it in my mind to try and find out what Sephora had decided to do about their “epic rewards fail” back on August 10. (I remember that date. It’s my birthday. A birthday I spent practically all day sitting at my computer trying to get the makeup case I wanted. Moar Fail!) See, Sephora had sent out an email in response to the emails they received – specifically to those who had emailed them – promising to respond by September 1. I never caught the email they sent on August 25 to me:  Continue reading “The Sephora Epic Rewards Fail – Their Fix”
