First off…
What is Beauties On Fire?
It’s a collaboration of beauty and fashion bloggers, spearheaded by the amazing Elisabeth over at Everything & Nothin’. Every week there will be a different theme, and the participating bloggers post to that theme, and the posts are shared via Elisabeth’s blog. You can read more about it on her post here, as well as find the other posts for this introduction at the bottom of the page. Would you like to join up? Drop her a line! The more, the merrier!
The first post is an introduction, so here goes!
1.) Tell us a little about your blog and why you decided to start blogging:
This is the second incarnation of my original weight loss blog. I decided I wanted to expand, to share more than just weight stuff. I love makeup, new ideas in skin care, and just being able to talk about my life and ideas. Well, some of my ideas, at least! I’ve been bad about following a set schedule for blogging, which is something I intend to work on.
2.) How long have you been blogging?
I have no idea – about three years, I think? Before WordPress, I kept an online journal over at LiveJournal. For years. I sort of with Facebook had never gained popularity (and not just because I think Mark Zuckerberg is a bit annoying), because LJ was a good platform to just write.
3.) Do you consider yourself a fashion blogger, beauty blogger, or both?
I consider myself an everything blogger, really. I’d have to lean towards beauty blogger if it was only between these two, though.
4.) List 3 things you love to do besides blogging:
- Visiting historical museums and sites. I am a complete history goob.
- Writing, though I haven’t been doing much of that for a bit. I need to get back into it, and soon! I have a couple story ideas in my head I really want to write.
- Needlework. Like cross stitch, embroidery, blackwork, redwork. Mom taught me how to stitch when I was little, and I remember her most with either knitting, stitching, or a book in her hands.
For Beauty Bloggers: What style of makeup do you enjoy the most: Natural, Trendy, Glamorous? Show us some of your best looks…you can create a small collage for this (this collage can be used to show readers your beauty style). Also, what is one beauty product you can’t live without and why.
I’d have to say I’m usually tossing on natural, simply because it’s quick and easy. My favorite, however, is… drumroll… historical styles! (Yeah, y’all didn’t even expect that, did you? Pffft…) Seriously, I am in love with being able to recreate makeup from the Teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s… and I love the perfumes from back then, too.
My one beauty product I can’t live without…. oooh. Perfume, honestly. Assuming cleanser and deodorant and all don’t count! But perfume can just lift my spirits, or bolster my confidence. And I have a few signature scents that just say “Syd”!
I would put a collage of looks here, but I’m a bad beauty blogger and actually don’t have any photos of my looks!

Oooh, that might be a great twist! You’d have to ask Elizabeth at the blog link above, though – she’s the brains AND beauty behind this.

Dang girl!!! I am impressed…you are so quick!! Aka why I love you haha!! I am so glad you joined the collab…like so glad!!! We can all learn so much from you!! Our lovely veteran blogger! Three years is amazing girl!! You totally make me want to pull out my crochet hooks and start crocheting. I would love to see your beauty recreations!! I love retro beauty!!! I love perfume too and have way too many…it’s sad really haha!! And let me tell you…perfume does go bad haha! I pulled out one the other day and all it smelled of was…straight up alcohol. To the dumpster it went haha. I almost cried watching $80 go down into the can! I totally can’t wait to see where this collab takes all of our blogs! Watch out internet…#beautiesonfire is coming for ya!!!

I’ve had some of my perfumes go bad, but the funny thing? The ones from the 60s and 50s, if kept well sealed (I put them in baggies) and kept out of sunlight and high temperatures, they seem to keep their fragrance well. Maybe it’s just another case of things being better made back then?? And with the looks – I’m just starting with that! I’ve tried a few, but never anything to photograph and publish. Hecks, me having a YouTube channel is going to be a stretch! LOL But nowwwww thanks to you, I’m going to have to take the photos. 😛 heeee – THANK YOU again for letting me join!

Too bad that you don’t take photos of your looks. I’d love to see how a historical makeup style looks like.
But I absolutely get that part with not having photos. I keep trying but the photos I take of makeup are just… not to be shown for now.

I really don’t apply a lot of makeup very often. (Hard to do when the bathroom is still sweltering from a shower and Hims is wanting to leave five minutes ago!) But now I’ve totally got it in my mind to do this! Oooh – maybe even a retro version of the different themes each week?
And YESH!!! I’ve tried some photos of my makeup, but they just haven’t looked very good. It might be cheating, but I’m considering Photoshopping just a bit to get lighting and tone right!

I’ve taken into consideration Photoshop as well but I find it so difficult to learn.

I wound up taking a class in it a few years ago. There are a lot of great tutorials on YouTube, if you’d like to give it a try. There’s also a free program you can install that’s pretty much like Photoshop called GIMP. A lot of friends love GIMP, but I felt more comfy with PS.

I love history and visiting historical places! We have plenty of those in Greece so it would be a problem for me not to do so… Hahaha jk…. I love your post and I cannot wait to see more, I can guess that when you saw classic beauty was the winner theme you were super excited and as an expert of that kind of beauty you’ll do your best for the post

*laffs* Oh, I’m not an expert on the beauty aspect, though I wish I was! But this will be soooo fun to learn. And I have an idea for a couple photos, though I will need Hims and his car to help! One of my first books (to read myself) as a child was Greek mythology. I’ve wanted to visit Greece since way way young – and just so I could see the history. I envy you living in the midst of it! 🙂

Yeah we’re totally gonna need pics of these historical looks girl! And I don’t think it’s cheating to use Photoshop to correct it to how it looks in person in ideal lighting. I openly admit to probably not posting a single 100% edited picture, ever. My photography and photo editing background just won’t let me. But I try not to cross the line to changing how it looks live.

I will erase cat scratches and little odd bruises (I wake up with bruises I didn’t have the night before!!!) and stuff like that when I’m doing swatches, because seriously – who wants to be distracted by that? My fat doesn’t like the harsh lighting, so I will soften edges a bit, and if the shot is off a little on product packaging, I’ll mess with the light and dark and color correct if it’s needed. Otherwise, I slap a border on it and post. 🙂

Haha I thought I was the only one waking up with strange bruises!!!! And the cats don’t even sleep with me. So confusing. I don’t think Anyone prefers the way they look in harsh lighting 😉

I will! I actually bought my first pair of fake eyelashes for this… I have to find my camera so I can film an embarrassing video!

Thank you! I haven’t been able to do cross stitch or anything for about a year – I need glasses. Yep, spectacles!!! Going to the eye doctor on Saturday. 🙂 And see, you guys keep saying you want to see historical takes on these themes – you’re all just challenging me now! LOL! 🙂

Great post, I really enjoyed getting to know more about you. It’s so unusual to come across a lover of History! You’re definitely a very intriguing lady and I’m sure I’ll delight in reading your blog more. I’d love to see some of your needlework, I love anything creative and crafty like that! 🙂

Awww, thank you! I finally got some glasses so I can actually SEE to stitch again. (Too many hours at the computer!) One of my projects for today is to clean off my craft table *again* and start back into it. 🙂 Do you stitch anything yourself? I’d love to see your work!

You’re more than welcome! Hahaha I think I also have that problem but I instead choose to strain my eyes even more by trying to force myself to see, in fairness I think my issue is mostly due to sleep deprivation. Oh I feel you there, once you start it just gets so messy and so fast! Sadly I don’t, I used to do a lot of sewing a few years ago but I haven’t done any in a long time, aside from repairing seams and things. I’d really love to get back into crafty bits and bobs though!
